The story takes place in the coastal region of South Wales. Morgan de Guy, together with his two friends, ponder the discovery of two corpses which have been found on the family Estate and the strange properties of a small bone which has fallen into their possession.

Against this background strides the mystical figure of Tal - a strange man, a recluse on Glascwm Estate with secrets profound and universal! The three friends are urged by Tal to master the arts of crossbow, sling and throwing knife, these ‘medieval weapons’ as a means to counter the enemy.

De Guy then his two friends become aware of their mutual liaison d’etre - membership of the ‘Tones’. The future path on which the three friends must tread is made clear by Tal, as is his true identity. What is so apocalyptic that Tal must keep from the authorities, from the institution of  law and order, always and forever?

The ability of the individual to cope with the fruits of technology is a muted one, whilst the triumph of the nonconformist over ‘organisation man’ is a persistent cry throughout the story.
